BYD overtakes German brands as Egypt's top EV seller

Official Egyptian General Traffic Department data shows BYD became the #1 EV seller in Egypt in April 2025, ahead of Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW.

April 2025 registration data from the Egyptian General Traffic Department shows BYD overtaking Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW to become the #1 EV brand by new registrations in Egypt. The shift confirms the broader trend visible across emerging markets: Chinese OEMs are converting price-competitive, software-rich EVs into mainstream demand.

BYD's Egypt lineup currently centers on the Dolphin Surf city EV, the Sealion 6 EV plug-in family SUV, and the Han executive sedan. All three use BYD's in-house Blade Battery — a long-form LFP cell-to-pack design with strong thermal stability and a long calendar life — alongside BYD's own e-Platform 3.0 architecture.

For service operators, the volume shift matters because LFP packs and BYD's BMS firmware behave differently from the NMC packs in older European EVs. State-of-charge calibration, regen mapping, and 12V battery health all need BYD-specific procedures. EVLAB runs the dealer-grade scan tools and follows BYD's diagnostic flows for the Dolphin, Sealion, Han, and the broader Atto family.
